Or send yours. <p><b>Quality</b> - Each of our models receives the personal craftsmanship of the luthier. Final tuning and quality sound testing is done by our resident Bardic musician. We use no laminates; all of our solid woods are hand selected and custom milled. We encourage you to specify options and designs that will create an instrument that is uniquely yours. <p>We have two models, Standard, HDS and Delux, HDD, each with two string configurations. The more portable 12/11 (12 treble and 11 bass courses) is 34"X14"X3'. The fuller 15/14 (15 treble and 14 bass courses) is 43"X26"X4". <p>Both models feature the same quality construction and internal design. The HDD models are visually more attractive than the standard HDS models. The HDS models have a mahogany back and soundboard. The HDD models have a mahogany back, walnut front and rear rail facing and a mahogany or spruce soundboard. The HDS options are limited to soundholes and soundboard. The HDD options are quite varied. <p>Double strung courses are standard. Bridges are single piece maple with delrin saddles. A tuning wrench and two maple hammers are included. The finish is clear shellac and lacquer. No stains are used. <p>Instructions for the care and tuning of your dulcimer will be included. Teaching aids are available. These are all made to order, not mass produced. (Also Known as a <a href="HTTP://renaissance-faire.com/shop/tri-mountain-decimer3.JPG">Fretted Dulcimer.</a>) All models are 2" deep, producing a rich resonance that is especially appreciated by fingerpicking enthusiasts. Length is 34" with a 27" fret pattern of 17 frets including the 6 1/2 and 13 1/2 frets. Maximum width is 7" (minor measurement variations will occur). <p>We use the tried and true Grover 870 tuning pegs with black ivorine buttons, and use loop end strings on brass escutcheon pins. Nut and bridge are of a complimenting hardwood, usually maple, unless you specify otherwise. The traditional heart soundholes are standard. You can specify others from our options or your own design. <p>Four strings are standard. Three, five and six strings are options. <p>The model <b>FDSTD</b>, teardrop shape, and <b>FDSHG</b>, hourglass shape, feature solid woods (no veneers) and produce our best resonance and sound quality. The base wood is mahogany with a full scroll peghead. <p>The models <b>FDLTD</b>, teardrop shape, and <b>FDLHG</b>, hourglass shape, employ laminated wood and a hooked peghead to reduce cost. The sound quality is excellent with a brighter timbre and less sustain than our solid wood models, above. <p>Don't overlook our fine sounding backpacker's and traveler's Dulcimette and the brighter sound of the Germanic Scheitholt and French Eppinette, Old World, ancestral reproductions. Ours produce a bright sound especially suited to contrasting accompaniment to a fretted dulcimer or other instruments, as well as for solo play. The standard wood is an oak body with an ash soundboard. You may specify options. <p>The German Scheitholt is rectangular, 4" wide. The French Eppinette is wedge shaped tapering to 6" wide at the end block. Tuning pins and wrench replace tuning pegs. A stylized, primitive horse peg head is available. The three models are a straight sided wedge <b>(FDS0HUM)</b>, a single bout, far side recurved <b>(FDR1HUM)</b>, and a double bout, both sides recurved <b>(FDR2HUM)</b>. Water proof glue used in the laminating process prevents frame warp and separation that occurs in lesser quality bodhrans. These frames are laminated to a 1/2" thickness; the inside is 1/8" oak and the outside 1/8" mahogany. Alternate woods cost slightly more. <p>The skin anchor trim is with 32 tacks. We use the best quality goatskin that we can obtain, producing the bright, resonant thunder expected of the bodhran. A tripper (beater) is furnished with the bodhran. <p>You are encouraged to select options that will create an instrument that is uniquely yours. The outside wood, tripper wood, and type and number of tacks can be varied. You may submit artwork for the skin, or use some of our standard artwork. <p>Clear shellac and lacquer are the finish. Instructions for the care and feeding of your bodhran will be included. Teaching aids are available. <p>We make a traditional Irish style bodhran, <b>IRBOD</b>. The frames are not as sturdy or attractive, but they are a quality instrument using the same high quality goatskin. They have custom milled and individually laminated frames. Both are double headed. <p>The bomba heads are calfskin with the hair left on. They are rolled on a frame that is then stretched down with a wood ring over the body. The heads are tuned (stretched) with a lace work of leather strapping. Sliding leather rings tighten or loosen the head. This comes with two beaters. One with a pad for the drum head and one without a pad for the rim. Conventional drumsticks can also be used, but are not furnished. They come in various sizes and are best obtained from a local music store. <p>The Macedonian Tupan heads are goatskin stretched over the frame at each side. The tuning is chromatic, with the diatonic scale on the right and the sharps and flats on the left. This can be reversed for left handed players. The strings are bowed between the anchor pins. A truly delightful tone is produced. We make four differently sized and tuned models. Variations to fit your desires can be made. <p>The side rails and tuning block are maple. The standard soundboard and back is mahogany. Different woods for the soundboard and back as well as wood trim on the perimeter, are optional. <p>The standard bridge is constructed of maple laminated between two sections of wood to match the wood type on the back. The traditional round soundhole is standard, but you may select options, ours or yours. <p>One bow is standard using the same wood used on the back. A tuning wrench and rosin are also furnished. We use 16 brass strings from F to g'. It produces a rich Celtic harp like tone. It can be used to play chords or melody. It can be held and played with one hand, or played with both hands if laid in the lap or on a table. <p>The frame is maple with standard mahogany back and soundboard. Different woods for the back and soundboard as well as perimeter, are optional. <p>The dimensions are approximately 23" X 11" X 2". There are many fine mandolins on the market today and, so, we do not offer it except on a special bid. <p>Not so with the rest of the family. We do offer the mandola, both 8 and 10 stringed, and the cittern ( mandocello, octave mandolin, Irish bouzouki ), also in both 8 and 10 stringed models. We also offer a grand mandobass. <p>All are flat backed with a slight arch to the back and the soundboard. The traditional oval soundhole is lined with wood herringbone inlay. White and black banding and purfling completes the outer edges. <p>The fret arm is in mahogany, unless specified otherwise, with a steel reinforcement imbedded. The fingerboard and peghead are capped with black ebony. <p>The body is in your choice of flamed mahogany or rich walnut. The sounboard is in your choice of spruce or cedar. Other woods are available on a special bid basis. <p>The tuning pegs are standard nickel plated and the string anchor is heavy gauge, solid brass, polished and sealed. Gold plated tuning pegs are available at an additional cost. <p>The question of why 10 strings or 8 strings is simple. The traditional instrument has 8 strings providing four double strung courses. By adding a fifth course in the higher pitched side, it gives more versatility in range for the melody players. The lower pitched four courses are the instrument's traditional tuning. Another big advantage is that the mandola can be capoed down and played in the mandolin pitch (on the higher pitched four courses). Likewise the Cittern can be capoed down and played in the mandola pitch. Two instruments in one. Your choice. <p>The mandola and mandocello come with a top of the line, plush lined, hard shell case. The mandobass comes with a padded cloth case. Using rosin or wet fingers or cloth, the stick/string is gripped and pulled and/or pushed. The fingers "skid" transferring the vibration to the drum head. The result is a growling sound. The larger the head the more bass the tone, and the smaller the head, the more treble. Tone changes can be achieved by pressing in on the skin. <p>The devices are considered to have originally been used to flush game for hunters or frighten evil spirits, and eventually found their way into various ethnic music as percussion. It survives most notably today in the Flemish (Belgian) rommel pot and the Spanish cuica. The cuica then found its way into the ethnic music of South America. <p>Own one. It is played by holding it in one hand. The sound is produced by dragging the other hand along a waxed string that is attached to the inside of the goatskin head. In the hands of a practiced individual they are a visual as well as audible entertainment form. These are not hard to play but take some practice to gain control. <p>Bones were probably originally picked up from the scrap heap or fire by primitive peoples all over and struck together as a percussion instrument to a chant, song or dance. Spoons in later cultures were used the same way. <p>Today, bones, in a rib shape, are most notably seen in the Irish style, one pair in a hand, "rattling" them with rapid wrist motions. Leave it to the Irish to figure out a way to make a simple primitive instrument complicated. Fortunately it takes only a little time to master it. We furnish a simple instruction book with each pair. <p>While we do carry imported bone bones, we make our specialty bones in a variety of wood. Some are simply functional and some are beautiful for the wood color and grain. Generally the softer woods, pine and mahogany, are more muted while the harder woods and especially the tropical woods, due to their high oil content and density, are louder and sharper. All have plastic mouthpieces, on either lacquered brass or nickel plated bodies. Soodlum uses a green mouthpiece on all bodies, while Generation uses blue on the nickel and red on the brass. <p>Some say the plain brass is more mellow. One thing is for sure, the nickel stays shiny "forever" while the brass eventually tarnishes making it either unsightly or grandly weathered, depending on the beholder. <p>These are easily played six hole whistles using overblowing for second and third octaves. We also stock Shaw and Clark true rolled tin whistles with a wooden aperture plug for the mouthpiece.
